Derry Under 20 Football Management

Derry GAA – Damian McErlain steps down
Derry GAA can confirm that Damian McErlain has stepped down from his position as Derry U20 football manager.
Having given over ten years of service across all levels within Derry GAA, Damian leaves a legacy that will be felt in the county for years to come. After a successful spell as minor manager (2015–2017), Damian went on to manage the Derry senior football team (2018–2019), winning the NFL Division 4 title in 2019. He then returned for a second spell as minor manager (2023–2024), followed by two seasons as U20 manager (2025–2026).
His appointment as minor manager in 2015 kickstarted a renaissance at underage level. In the twelve seasons since his appointment, Derry have contested nine Ulster Minor Football finals (five titles), four All-Ireland Minor Football finals (three titles) and six Ulster U20 Football finals (one title).
Damian’s own teams reached five Ulster Minor finals and three All-Ireland Minor finals, winning four Ulster titles and back-to-back All-Ireland titles in 2023 and 2024. He remains the only Derry manager to win back-to-back All-Ireland Championships at any level.
Derry GAA sincerely thanks Damian and his management team for everything they have contributed during their time with the county, and wishes them every success in the future.
Damian McErlain said:
“I have decided to step down from my role as Derry U20 Football Manager.
It has been a huge privilege to manage Derry teams at all levels for over 10 years. The success we enjoyed at minor level across two spells, which included four Ulster titles and back-to-back All-Irelands in 2023 and 2024, belongs to the players. Their commitment, talent and character made every one of those days possible.
What I am proudest of is watching so many young players come through our teams and go on to represent their clubs and county with such distinction. Many of them are only at the start of their journey, and I have no doubt the best is still to come.
I want to thank my backroom team of Gavin, Antoin, Johnny, Eoin, Lawrence, Paddy, Kerry, Tiernan and Joe for their massive contribution towards our success, which too often goes unseen. I also want to thank the clubs, and the parents, families and partners of the players, who made countless sacrifices along the way.
I wish the players every success in the years ahead. Doire Abú”.
