Victory for Louth as Derry fall short in Ardee
FULL-TIME: Louth 1-19 v 0-18 Derry
Football League Division 2 | Defy Páirc Mhuire, Ardee | Saturday
Derry’s push for promotion goes into the final weekend as Louth claimed a four-point win in Ardee, capitalising on a strong first half and key moments after the break to secure victory.
On a day that carried real weight at the top of Division 2, the home side made the sharper start. Dara McDonnell opened the scoring with a two-pointer, setting the early tone before Louth struck a decisive blow on 12 minutes. A foul on Kieran McArdle led to a penalty, and Sam Mulroy made no mistake from the spot to push Louth four clear.
Derry struggled to find early rhythm despite enjoying spells of possession. Niall Loughlin got them up and running and would go on to lead the scoring with seven points, but Louth’s defensive structure and counter-attacking threat kept the Oak Leafers at arm’s length.
Two-pointers from Mulroy and Paul Mathews extended the hosts’ advantage, and with the wind at their backs Louth closed the half strongly. Brendan Rogers did manage a late Derry score, but at the break the gap stood at seven points, 1-08 to 0-04, leaving Derry with work to do.
With the conditions now in their favour, Derry responded after half-time. Loughlin pointed early and a two-pointer from play helped reduce the deficit, while Paul Cassidy also landed a two-pointer as the visitors began to build momentum.
The gap was cut to three at one stage, but each time Derry threatened, Louth had the answer. A spell of three points without reply steadied the home side, while goalkeeper Niall McDonnell proved a crucial figure with a series of interventions to deny Derry clear goal chances.
On 62 minutes, with Derry pushing hard, Shane McGuigan won a penalty that offered a route back into the contest. However, McGuigan’s effort was saved by McDonnell, preserving Louth’s lead and shifting momentum firmly back in favour of the hosts.
Louth took full advantage. Substitute Tadhg McDonnell made an impact late on, adding scores that helped carry his side through the closing stages, while Derry were left chasing the game.
There were positive contributions across the Derry attack, with Loughlin’s accuracy, scores from Conor Glass, Cassidy and Matthew Downey, and work rate throughout, but Louth’s efficiency in both boxes proved decisive.
The defeat leaves Derry still firmly in the promotion mix heading into the final round, where a home fixture against Cavan will now carry added significance.
