On Tuesday 22nd July, Derry held the first under 6 hurling blitz of the season in Owenbeg. The new 4G pitch proved to be an ideal surface for the young hurlers as the ball travelled well , the new pitch and a warm summer evening led to a very enjoyable night for the children and parents. Well done to all the clubs who participated. Five clubs in all took part, Kevin Lynchs, Slaughtneil, Na Magha, Banagher and Swatragh with over 100 children participating in the 5-a-side games. The standard of hurling on show was very good from children of such a young age. The next outing for the under 6 teams will be on Tuesday 12th August.

On Saturday past, the u12 hurlers of Kevin Lynch’s Dungiven travelled to the prestigious mini All Ireland, hosted by Mullinahone in Tipperary, home club of All-Stars Eoin & Paul Kelly, Paul Curran and hurling legend John Leahy.

The lads were drawn in a very tough group with teams from the Hurling strongholds of Galway & Limerick. They began the day with 2-4 to 0-2 win over Ballybricken/Boughermore of Limerick and followed it up with a 2-5 to 1-4 win over Cappataggle of Galway. The final game of the group was a comfortable win over Castleblayney of Monaghan; by 4-4 to 0-4. The Lynch’s topped the section and qualified for the A semi final against Kilcormac/Killoughy of Offaly. After a titanic battle and a last minute goal the teams were still level. Due to the tight schedule no extra time was played and the Lynch’s qualified for the A final on Count back, KL had better results in their group. The final pitted Kevin Lynch’s against out old rivals from previous tournaments, Clonmel of Tipperary. The young Lynch’s hurled superbly and gave their Tipperary counterparts a hurling lesson winning by 4-5 to 0-2 to clinch the Mullinahone A trophy for the second year in a row led by joint captains Richie Mullan and Tiarnan McHugh. Credit must go to the entire panel of players as they all performed superbly throughout the day. The lads stayed with host families during the weekend and their behaviour and manners were impeccable and a credit to the families.

Many thanks to the supporters who travelled to Tipp to cheer on the lads, and to the many supporters who provided a very noisy homecoming to Dungiven, Many thanks to Colm McGuigan of Derry GAA for providing the jerseys for the weekend and all the people who supported the lads fund-raising efforts . Finally massive congratulations and credit must go to the management team of Peter Mullally, Joe McHugh and Damien Hasson.
